2K Hires Popular Battle Royale Developer to Boost Troubled Hero Shooter Project Ethos
2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the forthcoming third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Management Transition Follows Mixed Feedback
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming unveiling last fall.
On Wednesday, 2K president a key figure updated employees about this organizational change through an internal memo, which highlighted that playtesting had indicated the need for a more defined direction.
The president expressed that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a refreshed focus, aiming to satisfy gamer demands.
Trend of Strategic Acquisitions
The news echoes a comparable action taken by the publisher in August, when they brought on an industry veteran from the Diablo team to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Below is the full content from the president's communication:
Hello Everyone—
I know you all just wrapped up your gathering - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this team. You all are some of the most motivated and creative developers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re eager for that relationship to continue.”
Given your hard work and flexibility, particularly over the last year, you repeatedly show that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS demo was informative. It validated the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had work to do. It revealed the requirement for a sharper vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the feedback to mind and reimagined the title with a refreshed direction - one that’s poised to deliver on its promise to our audience.
The trust in Project ETHOS grows every day. To boost the remarkable progress you’ve made, It is a pleasure to announce the new hire as the incoming Studio Head of 31st Union. After some time of conversations, he starts with us on next week.
Ben’s management and background in the competitive gaming genre is extensive, having dedicated the recent years developing and leading some of the most popular franchises in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and most recently, Apex Legends.
I invite you all in receiving Ben next week. We are all looking forward to keep seeing the development of the game in the months to ahead.
David
Experience of the Incoming Head
Brinkman presently serves in the position of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for Apex Legends. He previously was employed at major gaming companies in diverse development positions on the iconic franchise games, and, before that, had periods at other industry leaders.
Title Information and Vision
The upcoming game was revealed in last year in conjunction with a public demo. At the time, 31st Union described the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Build your hero in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the game's pitch states. "Face the opponents with unique powers, risks, and challenges that evolve every session. Do you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Alternatively take a risk, put it on the line, and pray your group can earn top ranking? The choice is in your hands."
The game does not have an announced debut schedule or supported systems, but players can expect further news as creation continues.
